BMW Masters Tips and Betting Offers, Lake Malaren Golf Club, 12th-15th November 2015
An opulent Jack Nicklaus-designed course, a large Chinese crowd flocking to watch top quality golf, and the Race to Dubai reaching its thrilling conclusion – this week’s BMW Masters has all the ingredients needed for a truly memorable European Tour meeting. Lake Malaren in Shanghai is the venue for a tournament that has taken on real significance in recent years due to its place at the denouement of the season.
The third tournament of the Final Series in the Race to Dubai, the BMW Masters is the penultimate event of the season, with the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai hosting the top 60 in the Race to Dubai standings. Victor Dubuisson and Russell Knox have claimed Final Series victories already, and there will be a full field at Lake Malaren desperate to claim a vital victory and a place in Dubai. If that wasn’t enough motivation, the thought of picking up the winner’s share of $7 million that Marcel Siem collected this time last year should do it.
With world number three Rory McIlroy opting not to play at Lake Malaren, the next highest ranked player in the field is world number six Justin Rose. The Englishman had previously claimed that the UBS Hong Kong Open would be his final European Tour event of the season, but when he won the tournament victory in the Race to Dubai became a realistic prospect and so Rose will appear again in China this week.
Having finally picked up his first win of the season on the European Tour, Rose can make a tilt for the top for the first time since he won the European Order of Merit back in 2007. His style of play should suit the pristine Lake Malaren course as well – the 2013 US Open champion’s iron play is among the best in the world, and his putting is always worth a couple of shots. Rose was out of contention a couple of weeks ago, but victory at the BMW Masters would propel him into the driving seat. Betfred are offering 6/1 on Rose winning this one.
The winner of the first European Tour event of the season will be keen to pick up at least one of the last two as well. Danny Willett has come a long way since victory at the Nedbank Golf Challenge, also winning the European Masters alongside a strong performance at the Open. The Sheffield-born golfer now finds himself second in the Race to Dubai rankings, and a top 25 finish this week will likely see him go into the World Tour Championship at the top of the rankings. A superb round of 62 last Sunday to finish tied for third place at the HSBC Champions, also in Shanghai, shows Willett is in form and ready to take China by storm once more. Bet365 are offering 22/1 on Willett winning at Lake Malaren, though with the focus simply on earning the requisite points to go into the final event of the European Tour season in top spot, it is worth taking an each way option on the Yorkshireman.
